What the Jupiter Mahadasha brings
Guru, or Brihaspati, is wisdom, teachers, faith, children, wealth and growth. Its Mahadasha lasts 16 years and is traditionally welcomed: life often expands through learning, family, ethical work and the support of mentors. Questions of meaning and dharma tend to become important.
Parashara describes a strong Jupiter period as bringing honour, wealth, the respect of rulers and learned people, happiness from children and spouse, and religious merit. Phaladeepika adds good counsel, success in study and teaching, and a generous, contented nature.
When Jupiter is strong or weak
Jupiter exalted in Karka, in its own signs Dhanu or Meena, or well placed in a kendra or trikona tends to give the classic Guru blessings: growth in knowledge, good reputation, children, prosperity and wise advisers. It is a period to study, teach and build on solid values.
Jupiter debilitated in Makara, combust, in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or ruling difficult houses may give a milder or mixed period: over-optimism, promises that take longer to fulfil, concerns about children or teachers, or expenses on family and religious duties. Moderation and humility help it give its best.
Jupiter Bhukti (25 months 18 days)
The opening sub-period carries Jupiter's themes most clearly: study, good advice, family celebrations and growing respect. With a weak Jupiter the same areas need care, for example avoiding overcommitment or excessive generosity beyond your means.
Saturn Bhukti (30 months 12 days)
Saturn brings structure to Jupiter's growth. Texts describe gains through steady work and service, property and responsibility, but also delays, fatigue and some discontent. If Saturn is well placed, this can be the period that turns ideas into lasting institutions.
Mercury Bhukti (27 months 6 days)
Mercury brings trade, writing, study and communication. It is often productive for business and education. As Jupiter and Mercury are not natural friends, texts also mention restlessness or disagreements with advisers if Mercury is weak. Check facts and contracts.
Ketu Bhukti (11 months 6 days)
Ketu in Jupiter's period often turns attention inward. Texts mention pilgrimages, spiritual study and detachment, along with possible separation from people or places and minor obstacles. It is a good time for meditation and for clarifying what truly matters.
Venus Bhukti (32 months)
Venus brings comforts, vehicles, beauty and relationships. Many enjoy prosperity, marriage or happy family events in this phase. Venus and Jupiter are teachers of opposite camps in the Puranas, so texts also mention disagreements or excess. Keep enjoyment balanced with values.
Sun Bhukti (9 months 18 days)
The Sun is a friend of Jupiter. This phase often brings honour, recognition from government or seniors, good relations with the father and a confident, purposeful mood. A weak Sun may bring friction with authority, so keep ambition respectful.
Moon Bhukti (16 months)
Jupiter and the Moon are the two planets of the auspicious Gajakesari yoga, and this sub-period is usually pleasant: fame, comforts, happiness through family, devotion and gains. A waning or afflicted Moon may bring emotional ups and downs, but the overall tone is supportive.
Mars Bhukti (11 months 6 days)
Mars is a friend of Jupiter and adds energy and courage. Texts describe gains of land and property, success over rivals and decisive progress. If Mars is afflicted, avoid disputes with siblings and hasty action, and take care with vehicles and tools.
Rahu Bhukti (28 months 24 days)
The Jupiter period closes with Rahu. Texts describe obstacles, anxiety, trouble from people who are not what they seem and sometimes travel or foreign connections. A well-placed Rahu can bring unusual gains. Keep your values clear and choose advisers with care.
Traditional remedies
Jupiter's remedies are about respect for wisdom and generosity:
- Mantra: chant Om Gurave Namah or Om Brihaspataye Namah, especially on Thursdays.
- Prayer: worship Vishnu or Dakshinamurthy, or recite the Vishnu Sahasranama.
- Charity: give chana dal, turmeric, yellow cloth or books on Thursdays, and support teachers and students.
- Conduct: honour your teachers and elders, keep promises and share knowledge freely.
How to read this for your own chart
In your Kundli, find Jupiter's sign, house and strength, and the houses it rules (Dhanu and Meena). Note whether it is combust or retrograde and which planets aspect it. Your Dasha page shows when Jupiter periods fall. These notes are general; your own chart decides.
