What the Rahu Mahadasha brings
Rahu is the Moon's north node, a shadow planet of desire, ambition and the unconventional. Its Mahadasha lasts 18 years and often brings big appetites and big changes: new fields, foreign places, technology, politics, crowds and people from outside your usual world. It magnifies whatever it touches.
Because Rahu has no sign of its own, Parashara says it acts like the lord of the sign it occupies and the planets it joins. The texts describe a well-placed Rahu period as bringing sudden rise, wealth, foreign travel and influence, and an afflicted one as bringing confusion, deception, anxiety and loss of reputation.
When Rahu is well placed or afflicted
Rahu tends to do well in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses, in signs such as Vrishabha, Mithuna, Kanya or Kumbha (by many traditions), and when its sign lord is strong. Then the period can bring rapid progress, success abroad, recognition in modern or unusual fields and the ability to overcome competitors.
In the 8th or 12th, joined with the Moon or Sun, or with a weak dispositor, Rahu may bring restlessness, unclear goals, trouble through dishonest people and a pull towards excess. Clear values, good advisers and moderation are the traditional safeguards.
Rahu Bhukti (32 months 12 days)
The opening sub-period is the longest and most concentrated dose of Rahu. With a strong Rahu, ambitions can take off quickly; with a weak one, confusion and worry are common. Texts advise caution with new associations and with shortcuts that seem too easy.
Jupiter Bhukti (28 months 24 days)
Jupiter brings wisdom into Rahu's period and is often one of its better phases. Texts describe the favour of people in power, steady gains, interest in learning and religion and relief from earlier troubles. If Jupiter is weak, guidance may come from the wrong teachers, so choose mentors carefully.
Saturn Bhukti (34 months 6 days)
Saturn and Rahu share a disciplined, worldly nature. Texts mention hard work, obstacles, disputes with servants or partners and possible legal matters. A strong Saturn can turn this into a period of solid achievement through persistence. Keep records straight and avoid cutting corners.
Mercury Bhukti (30 months 18 days)
Mercury is considered friendly to Rahu, and this phase often brings cleverness, success in business, technology, communication and study, and good friends. Parashara links it with comforts and a sharper mind. A weak Mercury may bring scattered effort, so finish what you start.
Ketu Bhukti (12 months 18 days)
Rahu and Ketu are the two ends of one axis, and this sub-period can feel unsettling: confusion, sudden changes, friction in the family and a sense of disconnection. It is also a natural time for introspection and for letting go of desires that no longer serve you.
Venus Bhukti (36 months)
Venus is friendly to Rahu and often brings comforts, vehicles, luxury, artistic work and relationships. Marriage or new partnerships may come in this phase. Texts also warn of overindulgence and of unconventional entanglements, so keep pleasure within your values.
Sun Bhukti (10 months 24 days)
The Sun and Rahu are opponents, as eclipses remind us. Texts mention friction with authority, issues with the father, ego clashes and lower vitality. A well-placed Sun can still bring recognition. Humility and honest dealings with officials are the best approach.
Moon Bhukti (18 months)
Rahu with the Moon can stir the mind. Texts describe worry, emotional ups and downs, travel and changes of residence, and concern about the mother. If the Moon is strong, the public, travel and trade may bring gains. Rest, routine and calm surroundings help a great deal.
Mars Bhukti (12 months 18 days)
The Rahu period closes with Mars. Energy and ambition run high, which can bring success in competitive or technical fields and gains of property. Texts also mention disputes, conflict with siblings and the need for care with fire, tools and vehicles. Act boldly but safely.
Traditional remedies
Remedies for Rahu traditionally aim at clarity, protection and moderation:
- Mantra: chant Om Rahave Namah, or the Durga mantra Om Dum Durgayai Namah.
- Prayer: worship Durga or Bhairava, especially on Saturdays, and keep a few minutes of quiet daily.
- Charity: give black gram (urad), blankets or mustard oil on Saturdays, and help people who are marginalised or far from home.
- Conduct: avoid intoxicants and speculation, be honest in every agreement and keep trustworthy company.
How to read this for your own chart
In your Kundli, find Rahu's house and sign, the lord of that sign and any planets with Rahu; Ketu sits exactly opposite. These decide much of Rahu's behaviour. Your Dasha page shows when Rahu periods fall. These notes are general; your own chart decides.
