Why nine, and why 'graha'
Graha means 'that which grasps' or 'seizes'. In Jyotisha the grahas are the moving points in the sky that are said to take hold of our attention and shape the quality of time. There are nine: seven visible bodies, the Sun to Saturn, and two shadow points, Rahu and Ketu.
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are not part of the classical system. Parashari astrology works fully with the nine.
The seven visible grahas
- Surya (Sun): the soul, vitality, confidence and a sense of purpose. Linked with the father, authority and government. It rules Simha (Leo).
- Chandra (Moon): the mind, emotions, memory and comfort. Linked with the mother, nourishment and the public. It rules Karka (Cancer). Because it moves fastest, its position matters greatly in timing.
- Mangala (Mars): energy, courage, drive and the ability to act. Linked with siblings, land and competition. It rules Mesha (Aries) and Vrishchika (Scorpio).
- Budha (Mercury): intellect, speech, learning, trade and humour. Linked with friends, writing and calculation. It rules Mithuna (Gemini) and Kanya (Virgo).
- Guru or Brihaspati (Jupiter): wisdom, teachers, faith, children and growth. Traditionally the great benefic. It rules Dhanu (Sagittarius) and Meena (Pisces).
- Shukra (Venus): love, beauty, art, pleasure and comfort. Linked with partnership, music and refined living. It rules Vrishabha (Taurus) and Tula (Libra).
- Shani (Saturn): time, discipline, patience, duty and hard work. Linked with service, old age and lasting results. It rules Makara (Capricorn) and Kumbha (Aquarius).
The two shadow grahas
Rahu and Ketu are not physical bodies. They are the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's path, known in astronomy as the north and south lunar nodes. Eclipses happen near them, which is why tradition gives them great importance. They always sit exactly opposite each other and move backwards through the zodiac.
- Rahu: desire, ambition, the new and the unconventional, foreign things and sudden change. It magnifies whatever it touches.
- Ketu: detachment, insight, spirituality and letting go. It can bring sharp intuition and a sense of having 'been there before'.
Benefic and malefic, gently
Texts describe Jupiter, Venus, a waxing Moon and a well-placed Mercury as natural benefics, and Saturn, Mars, the Sun, Rahu and Ketu as natural malefics. These words can sound alarming, but they simply describe style. A 'malefic' planet often brings effort, pressure or separation, and those are exactly the conditions in which people build strength and skill.
Saturn, for example, is feared by many, yet a well-placed Saturn is the planet of steady careers, patience and earned respect. No planet is purely good or bad. Its sign, house, strength and relationships in your chart decide how it behaves.
Friends and enemies
Each graha has natural friends, neutrals and enemies. The Sun, Moon, Mars and Jupiter tend to support one another; Mercury, Venus and Saturn form another friendly group. These relationships help an astrologer judge how comfortable a planet is in a given sign.
A planet is strongest in its exaltation sign and weakest in its debilitation sign. The Sun is exalted in Mesha, the Moon in Vrishabha, Mars in Makara, Mercury in Kanya, Jupiter in Karka, Venus in Meena and Saturn in Tula. Each is debilitated in the sign directly opposite.
Seeing your own nine
Your birth chart shows where each of the nine grahas was when you were born. The Kundli page lists each planet's sign, house and degree, and notes when a planet was moving retrograde.
