A circle of twelve
The zodiac is a 360-degree band of sky through which the Sun, Moon and planets travel. Jyotisha divides it into twelve equal signs of 30 degrees each, called Rashis. Because Jyotisha uses the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the signs are anchored to the stars rather than the seasons.
A sign is like a room with its own atmosphere. When a planet sits in a sign, it takes on some of that atmosphere: Mars in a fiery sign acts quickly, Mars in an earthy sign acts patiently.
The twelve signs and their rulers
- Mesha (Aries), ruled by Mars: bold, pioneering, direct.
- Vrishabha (Taurus), ruled by Venus: steady, sensual, loyal.
- Mithuna (Gemini), ruled by Mercury: curious, talkative, adaptable.
- Karka (Cancer), ruled by the Moon: caring, protective, emotional.
- Simha (Leo), ruled by the Sun: dignified, generous, proud.
- Kanya (Virgo), ruled by Mercury: precise, helpful, analytical.
- Tula (Libra), ruled by Venus: fair, gracious, relationship-minded.
- Vrishchika (Scorpio), ruled by Mars: intense, private, determined.
- Dhanu (Sagittarius), ruled by Jupiter: idealistic, frank, philosophical.
- Makara (Capricorn), ruled by Saturn: practical, patient, ambitious.
- Kumbha (Aquarius), ruled by Saturn: independent, humane, inventive.
- Meena (Pisces), ruled by Jupiter: gentle, imaginative, devotional.
These are short sketches, not verdicts. Real charts blend many signs at once: your Lagna, your Moon sign and the signs holding your planets all contribute, so very few people are 'pure' examples of any one sign.
How a sign shapes a planet
A planet feels most at home in a sign it rules, which is called its own sign (swakshetra). It does especially well in its sign of exaltation and finds expression harder in its sign of debilitation. In between, it is coloured by its relationship with the ruler of the sign it occupies: a planet sitting in a friend's sign tends to act comfortably, while one in an unfriendly sign may need more effort to give its best.
This is why an astrologer will rarely say 'Venus means love' and stop there. Venus in Tula, its own sign, can express grace and harmony with ease; Venus in Kanya, its debilitation, may show love through practical care and attention to detail. Both are valid expressions.
Elements
Every sign belongs to one of four elements, which describe its basic temperament:
- Fire (Agni): Mesha, Simha, Dhanu. Energy, initiative, enthusiasm.
- Earth (Prithvi): Vrishabha, Kanya, Makara. Stability, practicality, resources.
- Air (Vayu): Mithuna, Tula, Kumbha. Ideas, communication, connection.
- Water (Jala): Karka, Vrishchika, Meena. Feeling, intuition, sensitivity.
Movable, fixed and dual
Signs also have a mode of action. Movable (chara) signs, Mesha, Karka, Tula and Makara, like to start things. Fixed (sthira) signs, Vrishabha, Simha, Vrishchika and Kumbha, like to hold and sustain. Dual (dvisvabhava) signs, Mithuna, Kanya, Dhanu and Meena, adapt and connect. These modes are also used in muhurta, for example preferring fixed signs for foundations meant to last.
Your Moon sign and your Lagna
In India, when someone asks 'what is your rashi?', they usually mean your Moon sign, the sign the Moon occupied at birth. It is central to Vedic astrology because the Moon represents the mind, and it is the reference point for daily transits and the Vimshottari Dasha.
Your Lagna, or rising sign, is the sign on the eastern horizon at birth. It sets up the twelve houses of your chart. Your Sun sign matters too, but in Jyotisha it is usually given less weight than the Moon and Lagna.
Both are shown on your Kundli once you enter your birth date, time and place.
