The Lagna: where the chart begins
The Lagna, or Ascendant, is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. As the Earth turns, every sign rises in turn over the course of a day, so the Lagna changes roughly every two hours. This is why an accurate birth time is so important.
The Lagna represents you: your body, temperament and the way you meet the world. It is also the starting point for the twelve houses. In the traditional whole-sign method used in Parashari astrology, the Lagna sign becomes the first house, the next sign the second house, and so on around the zodiac.
The twelve houses
Each bhava (house) is linked to a group of life areas. These are the traditional meanings, kept deliberately broad:
- Self, body, personality and general wellbeing.
- Family, speech, food, savings and values.
- Courage, effort, siblings, communication and short journeys.
- Mother, home, vehicles, comfort and inner peace.
- Children, intelligence, creativity, learning and devotion.
- Daily work, service, competition and overcoming obstacles.
- Marriage, partnership, business dealings and the public.
- Transformation, research, hidden matters and inheritance.
- Dharma, fortune, teachers, higher learning and long journeys.
- Career, action, status and reputation.
- Gains, income, friends, networks and fulfilled wishes.
- Expenses, rest, foreign lands, retreat and spiritual release.
Groups of houses
Houses are also read in groups, which helps judge how easily a planet can work:
- Kendras (angles), houses 1, 4, 7 and 10: the pillars of the chart. Planets here act strongly and visibly.
- Trikonas (trines), houses 1, 5 and 9: houses of grace and good fortune. The lords of these houses are generally helpful.
- Dusthanas, houses 6, 8 and 12: houses of challenge, effort and release. They are not 'bad'; they describe the work of healing, research, service and letting go.
- Upachayas, houses 3, 6, 10 and 11: houses of growth. Results here tend to improve with time and effort.
House lords
Every house is owned by the planet that rules its sign. If your Lagna is Simha, the Sun owns your first house, Mercury your second (Kanya), Venus your third (Tula), and so on. An astrologer looks at where each house lord sits, because it shows how that area of life connects with the rest of your chart.
For example, if the lord of the tenth house (career) sits in the fifth house (creativity and learning), a person may find work that draws on teaching or creative skill. These are tendencies to reflect on, not instructions.
Planets also cast aspects (drishti) onto other houses. Every planet aspects the house seventh from it, and Mars, Jupiter and Saturn have additional special aspects. So a house can be influenced by a planet even when nothing sits in it.
Reading the houses gently
An empty house is not a missing part of life. It simply has no planet placed in it, and is read through its sign and its lord. Likewise, a planet in a dusthana is not a warning sign; many accomplished people have important planets in the sixth, eighth or twelfth houses.
The Houses page shows the sign in each of your twelve bhavas, the planets placed there and a short note on what each house relates to.
