What the Mars Mahadasha brings
Mangala is energy, courage, drive and the ability to act. Its Mahadasha lasts 7 years and tends to make life more active: competition, physical effort, land and property, siblings, technical work and leadership in difficult situations all come forward.
Parashara describes a strong Mars period as bringing gains of land and property, wealth through courage and enterprise, success over rivals and authority in roles that need decisiveness. Saravali notes success in fields linked with fire, metals, engineering, the army or the police.
When Mars is strong or weak
Mars exalted in Makara, in its own signs Mesha or Vrishchika, or well placed in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th tends to give courage, property, victory in competition and the energy to finish what you start. It is a good period for building and for physical discipline.
Mars debilitated in Karka, in the 8th or 12th, or afflicted by Saturn or Rahu may show as impatience, anger, disputes over property or with siblings, and a tendency to rush. Texts advise extra care around fire, sharp tools and vehicles. Channelling energy into exercise and work is the traditional answer.
Mars Bhukti (4 months 27 days)
The opening sub-period carries Mars at full strength. With a strong Mars it brings decisive progress, property matters and success in contests; with a weak Mars, heated arguments and haste. Plan before acting and let small provocations pass.
Rahu Bhukti (12 months 18 days)
Mars and Rahu together are intense. Texts mention disputes, sudden events, trouble from adversaries and the need for caution in travel and in dealings with authority. A well-placed Rahu can still give gains in competitive, technical or foreign matters. Stay within rules and avoid risky shortcuts.
Jupiter Bhukti (11 months 6 days)
Jupiter is a friend of Mars and usually brings relief and growth. Texts describe honour, the support of elders and teachers, gains of wealth, good news about children and interest in religious work. Energy is now guided by wisdom, a combination that tends to produce lasting results.
Saturn Bhukti (13 months 9 days)
Mars and Saturn pull in opposite directions, one urging speed and the other restraint. Parashara counts this among the harder sub-periods: obstacles, hard labour, frustration and disputes. Patience, a slower pace and respect for procedures help. A well-placed Saturn rewards persistent effort.
Mercury Bhukti (11 months 27 days)
Mercury adds intellect and skill to Mars's drive. It can be good for technical work, trade, negotiation and study. As Mars treats Mercury as an enemy, texts also mention arguments, disputes over documents or money and nervous strain. Think twice before signing and speak with care.
Ketu Bhukti (4 months 27 days)
Ketu behaves somewhat like Mars, so this short phase can feel sharp and sudden. Texts mention disputes, separations and the need for safety around fire and travel. It can also bring courage for spiritual practice and a willingness to drop what is not working.
Venus Bhukti (14 months)
Venus brings comforts, romance, vehicles, music and social life. Marriage or partnership matters often move forward and income may improve. If Venus is afflicted, passion can turn into quarrels or overspending, so balance enjoyment with restraint.
Sun Bhukti (4 months 6 days)
The Sun is a friend of Mars. This phase often brings recognition, the favour of seniors or government, success in leadership roles and a stronger reputation. A weak Sun may bring friction with authority or with the father, so keep ambition honest.
Moon Bhukti (7 months)
The Mars period closes with the Moon. Texts describe gains of wealth, property and comforts, support from the mother and a softer emotional tone. If the Moon is weak, irritability and family tension may surface, so slow down and listen.
Traditional remedies
Remedies for Mars traditionally turn its fire into disciplined service:
- Mantra: chant Om Mangalaya Namah or Om Angarakaya Namah, especially on Tuesdays.
- Prayer: worship Hanuman or Subrahmanya (Murugan, Kartikeya), for example by reciting the Hanuman Chalisa or the Skanda Shashti Kavacham.
- Charity: give red lentils (masoor), jaggery or red cloth on Tuesdays, or support blood donation drives and the armed forces' welfare funds.
- Conduct: daily exercise, patience in disputes and care for your brothers and sisters.
How to read this for your own chart
In your Kundli, find Mars's sign, house and strength, and the houses it rules (Mesha and Vrishchika). Check whether it is in a kendra or trikona, and which planets join or aspect it. Your Dasha page shows when Mars periods fall. These notes are general; your own chart decides.
