What the Moon Mahadasha brings
Chandra is the mind, feelings, memory, nourishment and the mother. Its Mahadasha lasts 10 years and tends to turn attention towards home, family, emotional security and the public. Life often feels more responsive to mood, and relationships with women and with the wider community gain importance.
Parashara describes a strong Moon period as bringing comforts, good food and clothes, the favour of people in power, wealth, marriage or the birth of children, and devotion. Phaladeepika speaks of pleasant travel, gains from water, agriculture and trade, and a calm, contented mind.
When the Moon is strong or weak
A waxing Moon that is exalted in Vrishabha, in its own sign Karka, in a kendra or trikona, or aspected by Jupiter tends to give popularity, emotional steadiness, property and a happy home life. People often become more nurturing and better at reading others.
A waning Moon, a Moon debilitated in Vrishchika, in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or joined with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn may show as restlessness, changing moods, worry about the mother's wellbeing and ups and downs in finances. Regular sleep, routine and supportive company make a real difference.
Moon Bhukti (10 months)
The first sub-period emphasises home, mother and the inner life. With a strong Moon this can bring a new residence, family happiness and good reputation; with a weak Moon, mood swings and indecision. Gentle routines and time near water are traditionally soothing.
Mars Bhukti (7 months)
Mars is a friend of the Moon and the two together are traditionally linked with earning. Texts describe gains through land, property and enterprise, and greater courage. An afflicted Mars may bring irritability, disputes at home or with siblings, so cool responses help.
Rahu Bhukti (18 months)
Rahu with the Moon can cloud the mind. Parashara mentions anxiety, confusion, fear of loss and trouble from hidden adversaries. If Rahu is well placed, especially in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th, it can also bring foreign travel, new ventures and unusual gains. Grounding practices and careful decisions help.
Jupiter Bhukti (16 months)
One of the most favourable parts of the period. Jupiter and the Moon together form a classic auspicious pairing: texts describe wealth, honour, happiness through children, progress in learning and the guidance of good teachers. It is a fine time for study, auspicious ceremonies and generosity.
Saturn Bhukti (19 months)
Saturn can make the Moon's period feel heavier. Texts mention responsibility for elders, slow progress, tiredness and emotional dryness. A well-placed Saturn rewards patient work with stable gains, property or a lasting position. Keep a steady pace and do not carry burdens alone.
Mercury Bhukti (17 months)
Mercury brings study, writing, trade and friendship. Many find this a productive phase for business, communication and learning new skills. As Mercury does not count the Moon as a friend, a weak Mercury may bring nervousness or misunderstandings, so put important matters in writing.
Ketu Bhukti (7 months)
Ketu with the Moon can bring restlessness, detachment and sudden changes in plans. Texts mention worries about family and the need to look after health. On the positive side, intuition sharpens and spiritual practice comes more naturally. Simplicity suits this phase.
Venus Bhukti (20 months)
Venus brings comforts, beauty, art, vehicles and relationships. Texts describe marriage or happy times with a partner, new clothes and ornaments, and support from women. If Venus is weak or afflicted, overindulgence or strain in relationships may need attention.
Sun Bhukti (6 months)
The Moon period closes with the Sun. Recognition from seniors or government, attention to the father and a stronger sense of direction are typical. A weak Sun may bring friction with authority or lower energy, so keep a balanced routine and act with humility.
Traditional remedies
These are acts of devotion that help settle the mind. Choose what suits you:
- Mantra: chant Om Chandraya Namah, or Om Namah Shivaya, especially on Mondays.
- Prayer: worship Shiva or the Divine Mother, and keep a fast on Mondays if it suits your health.
- Charity: give rice, milk or white cloth on Mondays, and care for your mother and elderly women.
- Conduct: protect your sleep, keep calm company and avoid decisions made in a dark mood.
How to read this for your own chart
In your Kundli, note the Moon's sign, house, paksha (waxing or waning) and any planets with it, and which house it rules (the house with Karka). Then see on your Dasha page when a Moon Mahadasha or Moon Bhukti runs. The descriptions here are general; your own chart decides.
