What the Sun Mahadasha brings
Surya is the soul, vitality, confidence and authority. Its Mahadasha lasts 6 years, the shortest of the nine, and it often brings questions of position and identity to the front: your standing at work, your relationship with your father and with people in power, and how clearly you know your own purpose.
Parashara describes a well-placed Sun period as bringing wealth and honour through the government or senior people, success in public work and a strong sense of purpose. Phaladeepika adds travel, courageous undertakings and gains through dignified effort.
When the Sun is strong or weak
When the Sun is exalted in Mesha, in its own sign Simha, or well placed in the 1st, 9th, 10th or 11th house, the period tends to bring leadership roles, recognition, good relations with officials and steady health and energy. Many people take on more responsibility and feel more visible.
When the Sun is debilitated in Tula, placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or afflicted by Saturn or Rahu, texts speak of friction with authority, strain in the relationship with the father, pride getting in the way, lower vitality and some distance from home. These are areas to handle with humility and care, not reasons for alarm.
Sun Bhukti (3 months 18 days)
The period opens with the Sun's own sub-period. Matters of status, government and the father are in focus. If the Sun is well placed, recognition and new responsibility can come quickly; if weak, keep pride in check, avoid needless disputes with seniors and pace yourself.
Moon Bhukti (6 months)
The Moon softens the Sun's heat. Texts describe comforts, support from the mother, good food, a new home or travel, and public goodwill. A waning or afflicted Moon may bring a restless mind or worry about family, so rest and routine help.
Mars Bhukti (4 months 6 days)
Mars, a friend of the Sun, adds drive. It is often a time for property, land, bold action and success over competitors. If Mars is afflicted, haste, anger and quarrels with siblings are the things to watch, and extra care with machinery and on the road is wise.
Rahu Bhukti (10 months 24 days)
Rahu and the Sun do not sit comfortably together, and Parashara lists this as one of the more testing sub-periods: obstacles, anxiety, friction with authority and family strain. If Rahu is well placed, especially in the 3rd, 6th or 11th, it can instead bring unexpected gains, foreign connections and success in competitive fields.
Jupiter Bhukti (9 months 18 days)
Jupiter is a close friend of the Sun, and this is usually one of the best parts of the period. Texts describe honour, the support of teachers and elders, progress in learning, happiness through children and interest in dharma and pilgrimage. Good decisions made now tend to last.
Saturn Bhukti (11 months 12 days)
Saturn and the Sun are natural enemies. This sub-period can bring heavier responsibilities, delays, tension with the father or superiors and a sense of being tested. If Saturn is well placed it rewards patient, honest work with steady gains. Discipline and modest expectations help.
Mercury Bhukti (10 months 6 days)
Mercury brings learning, trade, writing and communication. Texts describe gains through intellect, new friendships and success in study or business. If Mercury is weak or combust, guard against hasty agreements and mental restlessness, and read documents carefully.
Ketu Bhukti (4 months 6 days)
Ketu can bring detachment, unexpected change and a pull towards inner life. Texts mention separation from familiar people or places and the need for care with health and safety. Many use this short phase well for reflection, spiritual practice and letting go of what no longer fits.
Venus Bhukti (12 months)
The Sun period closes with Venus. Comforts, relationships, vehicles, art and social life come forward, and marriage or partnership matters may progress. As Venus and the Sun are not friends, a weak Venus can show as overspending or strain with a partner, so balance generosity with prudence.
Traditional remedies
Remedies are offered as devotion and discipline, not as bargains with fate. Choose what feels right and keep it simple:
- Mantra: chant the Surya mantra, Om Suryaya Namah, or recite the Aditya Hridayam, ideally at sunrise.
- Prayer: offer water to the rising Sun (Surya Arghya) and honour your father and elders.
- Charity: on Sundays, give wheat, jaggery or red lentils to those in need.
- Conduct: keep your word, act with integrity in positions of trust and avoid arrogance.
How to read this for your own chart
Find your Sun's sign, house and strength in your Kundli, and note which house it rules (the house with Simha). Then check your Dasha page for when a Sun Mahadasha or Sun Bhukti falls in your life. The descriptions above are general; your own chart decides how they play out.
